The Sevastopol marine Aquarium-Museum is one of the oldest public aquariums in Europe, was founded in 1897 in the Sevastopol biological station, Russia’s first scientific institution to study the flora and fauna of the sea.

The idea of the Aquarium creation belongs to the first Director of the Sevastopol biological station of the academician A. O. Kovalevsky. During the opening of the Aquarium had the only room where was shown the inhabitants of the Black sea.

After the establishment of Soviet power in Crimea in 1920, despite the lack of funds at the biological station, conducted regular work on updating of collections and the breeding of fish.

During the great Patriotic war the building of the aquarium was partially destroyed, and the exhibition, due to the severe cold and constant bombing, is irrevocably lost.

After the liberation of Sevastopol on 9 may 1944, the Director of the Sevastopol biological station was designated doctor of biological Sciences, Professor V. A. vodyanitsky. His name is connected with important stages in the history of the aquarium – restore requirements the construction of a new aquarium.

In the early 60-ies of the Sevastopol biological station was reorganized into the Institute of biology of the Southern seas. By 1965 a new building was constructed Aquarium, and its exposition was located in 3 halls.

During the existence of the Aquarium, has gained extensive practical experience in keeping different marine animals in artificial conditions. Every year the collection of tropical marine animals significantly replenished with rare samples of ocean fauna, donated to the Museum aquarium collectors, the scientists of the Institute.

At the present time the Aquarium-Museum occupies four halls with a total area of about 700 sq. m.:

In the first room shown is typical of coral reefs. Small size aquariums allow visitors to consider in detail small fish, shrimp and invertebrates.

The second room has 2 independent sections: the black sea and the tropics. Here built 12 wall swimming pools up to 7 cubic meters each and a circular pool with a diameter of 9 meters, depth 2.5 meters. Each aquarium tropical section has an independent (separate) closed system for the preparation and purification of water. These systems allow keeping in artificial conditions even tropical sharks.

In the third room of the Museum contains a large collection of tropical exotic animals, inhabitants of the Indian and Atlantic oceans.

The last room is inhabited by representatives of freshwater and reptiles. Here is a very interesting aquarium with a greenhouse, simulating the ruins of an ancient Cambodian temple.
